Emergency Pediatric Dentist
A dental emergency can happen to any child, at any time. Your child might fall and break or knock out a tooth. Another might bite their cheek or tongue to the point of bleeding and swelling. Depending on the situation, you may need your child's pediatric dentist to repair the mishap. Here's what to do in the meantime. The first thing to remember is to stay calm. Injuries to the mouth, face, and teeth are common in children. Staying calm and taking immediate action will help minimize the harmful effects of the injury and lessen your child's discomfort.

When is it a dental emergency?
Toothache or Dental Pain
Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and use floss to remove any trapped food. Apply a cold compress if there is swelling. Do not place aspirin on the gums. Contact the dentist as soon as possible.
Chipped or Broken Tooth
Save any broken pieces and rinse the mouth with warm water. Apply gauze if there is bleeding and a cold compress to reduce swelling. See the dentist immediately.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Handle the tooth by the crown only and rinse gently if dirty. If possible, place it back in the socket without forcing it. If not, store it in milk or saline solution and see a dentist immediately. Baby teeth should not be reinserted.
Object Stuck Between Teeth
Carefully try to remove it with dental floss. Do not use sharp objects. If unsuccessful, visit the dentist.
Lost Filling
As a temporary solution, place sugar-free gum or temporary dental cement in the cavity. Schedule a dental visit promptly.
Broken Braces or Wires
If a wire is causing irritation, gently push it into place using a pencil eraser or cover it with cotton or gauze. Do not cut the wire. Contact the orthodontist as soon as possible.
Facial Swelling
Facial swelling may indicate a dental infection. Seek immediate dental or emergency care.
Swollen or Red Gums
Rinse with warm salt water and contact the dentist. Pain relievers such as Motrin or Tylenol may be used if needed.
